Elizabeth Ann Short's body was found horribly mutilated, cut in half at pelvic level, with her blood drained out of her body, out in a wasteland in Los Angeles on January 15, 1947.

The nickname "Black Dahlia" given to the victim came either from her abundant brown hair, or from a dahlia flower that she wore in her hair, or from the black clothes she wore to go out at night.
